Why it’s good to have a period each month.

When you look at this photo, how does it make you feel? Once upon a time, I would have felt uncomfortable, thinking that a period shouldn’t be spoken about, hidden away like it is an annoying secret that comes once a month.

I even got to the point of demanding a coil to be fitted as these stop your period and last up to 5 years. What was I thinking?

Firstly as Women, a period is our body’s way of releasing tissue that our body no longer needs. Imagine not allowing our bodies to do the most natural thing in the world, our hormones being controlled by a pill or device.

Secondly, I believe that if you’ve been on the pill or other contraceptive “devices” for many years, it can take longer to fall pregnant. I’m definitely not a Doctor, this is my view but upon speaking to couples where it has taken them a little longer, the female has been on the pill, implant, etc, for some years. Now don’t get me wrong, there are many couples where the woman has fallen pregnant straight away. This isn’t trying to scare anyone on a contraceptive “device”; this is just an awareness of some side effects that the Doctors won’t tell you.

Surely if we are stopping our bodies from doing what it wants to do for many months, if not years, there is going to be repercussions in the future.

There are SO many positives to periods that we don’t get taught. Most importantly, a period can tell us quickly about any problems we have, including hormone imbalances and thyroid function. They allow us to have babies! How amazing is that?

So here’s to embracing our cycles, connecting to our bodies more and allowing nature to do what it does best.

If you have any questions regarding periods, seek advice from a Medical Professional or Holistic Practitioner.
